How long does it take to hike?

I'm trying to get a good feel on how long it will take to hike 10 miles one way, then 10 miles back, so I guess 20 miles total. I want to see if it's doable for my friends for our annual camping trip

Any thoughts?

that completely depends on the terrain. could be a couple hours each way, could be ALOT longer. always plan an extra hour or so in there incase something happens...

It definately depends on the terrain. I would guess about 5-6 hours total

Also depends on the pace of the group. Two people could easily hike faster than 10 people...

Re: How long does it take to hike?

thanks for the help guys.

It's Hunter Trail in the Eldorado National Forrest (NorCal). starts off at 3500 ft elevation, and ends at 5000 ft (so 1500 ft elevation gain)

It's around the Rubicon River area

Re: How long does it take to hike?

not to mention that it ends up at the Hell Hole Reservoir, so we'll be stopping there to swim, etc

lol yeah right, I can barely run 20miles in under 6 hours
This adventure would likely take all day.
Bring stuff for overnight just in case. You can never be too safe when it comes to the wilderness.

Re: How long does it take to hike?

An average person should be able to walk about 3 miles in 1 hour on flat ground.

Don't allow yourself to think that your trip back down will be easier or faster. It will be toward the end of your day, and many times walking downhill is more difficult on your body than walking uphill.

Re: How long does it take to hike?

Depends on the load, but if your group is in shape then 50 lb load (backpack/ water/ equipment) = 4 miles per hour on grade, but your inclined 1500 feet so probably 2.5 mph on the way up = 4 hours total (plus meal and two breaks). The way down will be 4 mph at a leisurly pace. Plus stopping time of 10-15 minutes per hour to take it all in. I will tell you, since you asked how long it will take means that you don't do this very often. I would seriously consider limiting your hike to 4-6 miles tops. 10 mile hike is pretty serious the first time out if you don't do it frequently and coming down will be quicker as you will not have the same load as on the way up and it's down hill. I have hiked 100's of miles and uphill IS slower than downhill, but at least your starting the trip on the hard part while your fresh.
