Portable car heaters? Are they worth it?

Hi.

We've got an accord who's heater core is shot. We were quoted close to a grand to replace it mostly due to labor (although the part isn't cheap either).

We're thinking about toughing it out this winter (in Maine) but the heater is putting out only a little warm air. The cold is one thing, the defrost is more important. Are there any options out there for portable space heaters for cars/trucks? I've seen a few portable defrost heaters that plug into the lighter and mount to the dash but the reviews are not that great.

Another thought I had was plugging a larger space heater into an ac converter but I don't want to risk shorting out anything.

Any tips or advice (besides dropping the grand on a car we're selling in the spring)?

Majestic Honda:

around $250 depending on what year. replace it yourself. it's not that hard. i just did one on a 1995 Accord for a friend.

a space or portable heater is going to do nothing for defrosting.

I agree, do it yourself. The dealer is going to charge and arm and a leg in labor just because it's tricky to get to and will take a while, and they charge per hour.

But, it's nothing that can't be done by you!
