Cool Supercharger vs turbo mpg?

I am planning on getting either a supercharger or a turbo for my 2003 tacoma double cab. What do superchargers and turbos do for gas mileage? Which one does better in that respect? Also, what are some of the biggest hp numbers people have pumped out of the 2003s? I want a sick setup. I'm in Montana and have no requirements on smog or anything else like that so I can make this baby really sweet! Can I get some input for you guys so I can have some options?

Re: Supercharger vs turbo mpg?

First thing is first.
Get rid of the whole "Gas mileage" thing...
Either you go fast...
Or you get good gas mileage.
You can probably get 300+miles to a tank with a nasty turbo or s/c, but as soon as you get into boost..... it goes bye bye.

make the choice.
Go Fast
Or Save gas.

Re: Supercharger vs turbo mpg?

My s/c setup properly tuned was getting 22.3mpg from day-to-day driving around and made pretty decent power at 9psi of boost with the 2.2" pulley.

A turbo setup will more than likely yield better mpg due to not pulling power off the motor via a s/c belt. It will also give you more power per every psi of boost due to cooler discharge temps that are produced. Ex. At 9psi with the s/c my truck made mid 250's whp yet was pulling nearly 50 bhp just to turn the s/c! A turbo setup will make this much power around 5psi and be a lot easier on the motor.

The downfall to a turbo for the 5vz is that the only company that makes them to my knowlege is sts located in utah and it is a rear mount setup and is not the best setup for making power but will work just fine. A s/c setup on this motor is much easier and less expensive yet yields way less power over just about any turbo setup you could have.

If you wanna go the cheaper route and make <300whp then go s/c.

If you wanna spend a little more and make >300whp then go turbo.

Re: Supercharger vs turbo mpg?

The mpg has a lot to do with the tune also, not just boost. I'm n/a right now and get roughly 20mpg. My bud has my old s/c setup yet gets around 20mpg also. He drives it hard all the time though and is hardly ever out of boost!

Re: Supercharger vs turbo mpg?

I have taken some pretty far trips with my 3.4 turbo. I average 26 mpg on the highway and about 20 in the city.

GO TURBO!!!

Re: Supercharger vs turbo mpg?

Turbo lag can actually waste you more gas than when you're in boost...

If you actually keep boost and don't fluctuate the throttle, boost can actually save you gas...

A lot of commercial vehicles run turbos... Mainly because it uses exhaust gas to power the device to gain you power... Vs. using engine powe to make engine power...

It's not what you do, it's who you do it with...
All systems are GO!!!
