Throttle Body Cleaning

Why did I wait so long to do this... I got up early Wednesday morning and was bored so I ventured on out into the garage. I changed my oil on Tuesday and figured I would clean the throttle body.

I have 127,000 miles on my 2002 and this is the first time cleaning it. I got it all nice and shiney and started it up. Damn... I can't even tell the engine is running! What a difference.

Well worth the 30 minutes.

Re: Throttle Body Cleaning

All I did was unscrew the clamp that holds the intake to the throttle body. Moved it aside and used simple green and paper towels/qtips to clean it. You can operate the valve manually to clean it real good. I sprayed the simple green on the towels and not directly in the throttle body. I used blue shop paper towels.

No need to remove the whole intake. Just push it aside.

Re: Throttle Body Cleaning

If you are going to clean the TB I would suggest removing it entirely from the intake manifold and using Throttle Body cleaner you can get from any parts store. While you are at it remove the Idle Air COntrol valve from the TB and give it a thorough cleaning as well.

Re: Throttle Body Cleaning

It's not hard to take the TB off. Just keep track of the vacuum and coolant lines. Here is a screen cap of the IAC on the TB from the '03 service manual, not sure if they changed the 2RZ TB like they did on the 5VZ, but it gives you an idea where to look. It's the part with the arrows and the electrical connector to control the valve.
