Ignition Coil Question

I changed out the spark plugs yesterday and I was wondering about the ignition coils. I checked them for damage and they appear to be fine. My truck has 208,000 miles on it now when should I replace these or as long as they work does it matter?

Re: Ignition Coil Question

They should be good if it's running strong with no misses. My 2rz has 206k with original coils, runs strong.

Re: Ignition Coil Question

I had to replace mine right before 150K, but i did have an issue. I have no doubt in my mind that they would still be fine if that issue didn't arise

Re: Ignition Coil Question

How many different types of spark plug coils were used on the 2.4L engines??

I was looking as some YouTube videos on changing spark plugs in Toyota engines, and those "plug coils" had connector fittings on the tops of the coil tubes over the plugs. Looking at my 2000 2.4L, I have "plug wires" coming off the tops and going to two "transformer coils" looking things on the RH side of the engine. So do I have the "expensive" coils that fit over the tops of the plugs or coils that mount on the side of the engine, and supply the high voltage spark "via wires to the plugs" like on a normal engine????

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Ignition Coil Question

The Direct Ignition System (DIS) that provides one coil unit per cylinder was adopted in 2000 for LEV (California-spec) 2RZ and 3RZ Tacos, and then all 4-cylinder Tacos from 2001 through 2004.

You must have a 2000 federal spec Taco.

Re: Ignition Coil Question

I know now. I spent the afternoon yesterday prerusing the internet in the search for an answer. It took me a while to find what I was looking for. The interesting thing was, that I found the "coils" (for my type of coil) for mounting on either the Passenger and the Driver sides of the engine.

Now I know why it's best to list the VIN numbers when looking for parts, so you know you have the correct ones for "your truck".

Now my quest is to find out if I have "solid lifters" or Hydrolics. I've seen both types in parts diagrams. Will have to look at the part numbers ToyotaPartsOnline gives me, and then do a google with that number.

Or if anyone here "really knows" the answer.

Thanks for the feed back. BWT
