Engine swap... Is it possible... 5vz-fe instead of the 4 cylinder engine

HI im a newbie here and i have this one question that has been interesting me... well i got a 1999 toyota tacoma 5spd manual with 4x4... however the engine is messed up due to previous owner letting out oil... then i got it and i want to some details on the engine and stuff... It had a 4 cylinder engine or should i say it has a 4 cylinder engine... however that engine is blown. But the transmission is all good! I want to get this truck running again but i would like to know is there any way i can install a 5vz-fe engine instead of the 4 cylinder, my dad has a 2004 tacoma V6 and thats what i want but with a manual trany.. so my question is can i just change the engine and put a V6 into the place of the 4 cylinder? will i need to get a different trany or will the trany on the 4 cylinder work with the V6 engine? what other components will il need to change? if you have done this before or know where i can get additional information it would be great! thanks!

yes it's possible. motor, tranny, ecu, wiring harness, possibly motor mounts, not quite sure about that, but it has been done before.

(1) Welcome to CT! ...

(2) As Al mentioned - it's 'do-able', but it'll require swapping out a lot of components. As a result, it's an open question whether it's 'worth it'.

Because it'll take significant amounts of money, components, time, and hassle to do it ... Is it worth that scale of investment(s) to you?

Re: Engine swap... Is it possible... 5vz-fe instead of the 4 cylinder engine

Just an additional note ...

In the 1995.5 - 2000 era, the following items were different part numbers depending on 4- versus 6-cylinder engine:

- engine mount (2 required)
- mount stabilizer (2 required)
- engine mount bracket (2 required)
- transmission mount (1 (?) required)
