tacoma power steering pump/rack..??

Ok..so here is what happened. Driving along the interstate on my way to get a christmas tree. The battery popped out of the battery tray and landed on the power steering line...starving the rack of fluid from the pump. I didnt know this and drove 100 miles and it started to make some noises. whining ang squeeking. I assume that i didnt do any damage to the rack??but i have no idea. Can anyone tell me what they think happened..and if i am assuming correctly in only replacing the pump. I can tell you that the line the battery was pinching..was not a complete cut-off. It was still getting fluid to the rack. Of all the work ive done on vehicles..ive never had any issues with power steering..so im kinda at a loss here.
Anyone wanna educate me

Thanks again
Nick

Re: tacoma power steering pump/rack..??

I'm gonna take a shot here so you get a quick answer. There really aren't any moving parts in a rack that would wear, it's simply a hydraulic piston like a shock absorber, starving it of fluid for a period of time will only make it hard to steer.

The pump may or may not be another thing.

How does the pump sound now that the line is unkinked?

If it was a kinked line, the whine may have been the pump overpressuring...OR...starving for lubrication. The pump does need a constant flow of fluid.

I would simply unkink the line. Check everything for leaks, top up my PS fluid level and see how it runs.
If the pump still makes noise, I would replace it.

I don't have a lot of experience with PS systems, does anybody flush their PS system to remove contaminants after a pump fails (for lack of lubrication or otherwise) kinda like an A/C system when the compressor grenades?

Anyways, that's what I would do.

AND TIE THAT BATTERY DOWN!!!

Kinda costly to just buy a new or reman rack when your not for certain thats your problem. I had to replace my rack due to leaking seals and it cost around $400 for a reman rack.

Sheesh dude thats no fun. why all that? I just fill up my PS fluid every month and a half or so. And if that rack gets at a certain angle it seems to leak more. So hopefully you can just replace the one part.
