iight so in the past week there have been about 5 threads about this . . .

Gen 1 (1995.5-1997)
Gen 2 (1998-2000) = will fit on a Gen 1
Gen 3 (2001-2004) = will fit on a Gen 1 & 2

Parts Needed for Gen 3 Swap:

Hood
Hood Weather Stripping
Grill
Headlight Fillers (pieces that go under the headlights)
Headlights
Corner Lights
Lower Valence Lights
Bumper
Bumper Cover (piece that sits on top of the bumper
Lower Valence
Bumper Brackets
Support Bar (this piece sits behind the lower valence)

Optional Parts:

Hood Latch
Headlight Mounts (although mine came with them keveinthefawkers did not)

Parts you can keep:

Fenders
Hood Brackets
Core support

Install:

everything bolts up rather easily except for headlights (this may just be for the Gen 1 trucks) i had to drill new holes and make the prior headlight holes larger to compensate for the larger Gen 3 headlights

we also had to weld on the lower valence support bar . . . .

you have to make an extension for your hood release . . .

i also used self tappers to screw in the corner light bracket (which they came with when i purchased them)

other then that everything snaps and bolts in

Part Locations:

since none of the local salvage yards have any parts for these i had to order them all

www.partstrain.com
www.rockauto.com
www.ebay.com

these were all the cheapest ( this swap isn't that cheap ! )

-hood
-hood hinges (stock hinge hook needs to be cut and ground down)
-head lights
-headlight filler and filler attachment accessories (i'm assuming you need them, i never got the chance to do this)
-fenders
-core support
-bumper
-grille

i didn't use the hood latch, so i don't know if the tacoma one will fit. you may have to tweak the ac lines a bit. i had to stuff the dryer behind the driverside headlight, any other spot and i would've had to get new lines. i think that's all, but i'll chime in if i remember something else.

i would get the gen 3 01-04 hood latch 30bucks . and small things like the clip for the corner light that goes on the fender 5 bucks each. also i would get the headlight support bracket 20 bucks each side and mount it on the fender. keeps everything lined up. also for the people with the older front end without the 4wd prerunner fender you should get a new fender liner also new fender brackets to let everything sit right

Which fender brackets? Im thinking of doing this but I dont want to lose my front fenders... tubs already welded in. I have the 2000.5 model 2wd with the Pre-runner front end. Give what I have read up top I can keep my fenders? Or was that just if I shaved the corners?

So i assume the gen 3 is more appealing than 2 or one...which I actually think gen 1 looks cooler...gen 2 is okay, and gen 3 looks like a pig face or something.
I wasn't a huge fan of the 01 - 04 front ends when they first came out but Im really starting to like the idea of the newer head lights and billet fixin's. That front end is one of the only ones I like with a cowl hood too.

The only difference in all of those is that the Gen 1 and 2 2wd trucks will need to buy fenders.

I have sum ?s, I saw at first for the 2wd gen1 to gen3 conv. you dont need fenders and then later on in the thread I saw that you did, can anyone clarify this for me? also I have a 96 (recessed headlights) are the corner light size in fender the same b/c I bought a pair of clears and had to shave the outside to make em fit and one screw hole is about 1/8 off :doah:and last if I was to swap from gen1 to 3 would it all line up nice or would it be off just a tad here n there? would the gen2 line up better? thanks alot :waytogo:

If it helps any I had to make L brackets (for my 95 to 98-00 swap) for the outside 2 mounting bolts on the marker side of the lights.....just bent up some L's out of 16 gauge paint lock, drilled a couple holes, slapped in some rivets and had myself some solid side mounts mimicking the ones on the 98-00....Ill try and post a pic soon

althought my taco had slight front end damage when i decided to the 98 to 04 swap i will say it was a b*otch... i thought that from reading alot of post on this is was pretty straight forward lol for those inexperienced at body work id say u can do it just dont expect to accomplish it in a way lol i had to run to the part store for so many 8 mil bolts and nuts not to mention making my own side headlight brackets out of sheet metal then shimming them with washers cause i bent them to short lol lets just say it fun the results are nice but just no you'll have fun lol my fenders worked althoogh needed slight messaging to get the corner light braket to be able to slide over the headlight but the fenders did work but me as impatient as i am should have bought the 04 fenders lol the hood latch worked sloted but does not work like normal but does work!! being im poor i'm cool with how it owkrs just moved the hood stops up lol this site has good knoledge but dont underestimate all the spot weld s all over the core support ( i used a 04 core support cause mine was bent up from wreak) i wish everyone etempting this all the luck i did it it so it is possible for stupid people lol just takes a lil red neck injanuity and afro inganeering and patience i did not have lol good luck!! its fun and the end results are worth all the stress and throwning tools lol :waytogo::meemee: yes i cant spell !:waytogo:

would it be just as easy to go from a 2nd gen 4x4 to a first i like the look of the fist gen 4x4 better. also will the bumper fit too i dont like the 2nd gen bumper

i think i would even trade with some one if they wanted the only problem is i live in hawaii

It would be more work in my opinion because the lights on the second gen are alot bigger and would leave a big hole to fill. The way that the first gen lights mount you would probably need a radiator support rather than screw around with it.....go buy a different truck instead of making your 98-00 look like the old one......sh*t swap it to the 01 if you do anything..... just my 2 cents

iight so in the past week there have been about 5 threads about this . . .

Gen 1 (1995.5-1997)
Gen 2 (1998-2000) = will fit on a Gen 1
Gen 3 (2001-2004) = will fit on a Gen 1 & 2
This information is wrong. 95.5-96 trucks have the same front end. The 97 had a different grill and headlights, although it kept the same bumper.

some early 97s had the 95/96 front end, they are typically the ones that say "TOYOTA" on the back in the big decals if i recall correctly. Hard to find the early 97s are....

Sorry to revive this thing from the dead but I had a quick question for everyone who has done the 01-04 conversion. If you decided to use the 01-04 core support, which brackets did you use for the ac condenser? I need a new condenser and I'm wondering if I can just buy a condenser from the 01-04 bodystyle.

Thanks everyone,

One more for bringing this back from the dead. I have a 2000 2wd that I'd like to convert to the 1996-1998 front bumper - (the one where the chrome extends all the way back to the wheel opening.) I have the actual chrome bumper piece itself, but nothing else. Does anyone have a parts list (or better yet) the parts that I would need to do this? I'm going for an old school custom kind of look and want to get rid of the newer style front bumper cover.

Thanks in Advance!

http://www.customtacos.com/tech/files/95-2000_parts_list.pdf

the first page of the PDF has the exploded diagram and part numbers for the 95-97 front bumper.

2WD blk/chr bumper - part no. 52101-04050/52101-04060
2WD blk valence - part no. 53911-04041
R/L outer bracket - part no. 52145-35020/52146-35020
R/L mounting bracket - part no. 52011-AD010/52012-AD010

The bracket part numbers are the same. Just depends on what bumper you wanna install.
