Well on Saturday, Onegame99 went ahead and slammed the rear of his truck using 3" drop leaves and 2" straight blocks. We went ahead and flipped the carrier bearing but we ran into a small problem.
After we let the truck down off the rack, there was a loud vibration and rubbing that you could hear. I looked under the truck and couldn't see anything wrong. We put the truck back up on the lift and look a closer look at the carrier bearing. On 2001 and up when you flip the carrier bearing the top (bottom before the flip) was resting on the crossmember, there was no gap at all. For ex. in the lower pic, there was NO gap on top of it like that.
We went ahead and unbolted it again and stuck a bolt in between the carrier bearing mounts and the crossmember. That gave us just enough clearance to get rid of the vibration and still keep a decent pinion angle.
This is just a warning to everyone with 2001's and up. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem or not, if you did, tell me what you did to fix that awful vibration that was happening.
you just have a bolt piched in ther for space? id go w/ new bolts all the way around but get some extra washers to put in between to get al lil more space....
yeah our initial thought was washers but we didn't have quite enought to make enough clearance, so we put a small nut in between there and it worked great. He's gonna check everything out to make sure that nothing's getting screwy.
I ran into the same problem, I just used the minimum amount of washers on the bolts to keep the bearing off the cross member. It probably moved it up 1/8 - 1/4". Some folks notch the frame.
Dan, its no hard work if you only flip it with washers, though you don't get much of a change this way. If you notch the frame, well that involves notching the frame, but you can get a better angle. Let me know if you want some help with any of this stuff, livin all close and all.
INACOMA,
Thanks for the advice, I am priniting this off right now for future reference as you know we will be using it in the near future, thanks again!
It's no problem Pete. I just wanted to let all of you 2001 + Extra cab owner's know about this. I talked to my bro today and he hasn't had any problems with it yet so we are gonna check on it next weekend just to be safe.
When I flipped mine, the bearing was touching the crossmember that holds it up just like INACOMA mentioned. On my test drive, it did not seem to make a difference though. No noises of any kind. My friend took it for an alignment this morning. I'll ask him if he heard anything since it is a longer drive than my 1/2 mile test drive.
Really Jason? You don't have a vibration or grinding sound when you are in reverse? That is when it happened the most in his truck....and when you would get on the gas and let off of it.....that's strange.
Just updating this for everyone. Last Saturday we installed the 2" Drop coil and his new DJM upper arms, while we were under there we checked out the carrier bearing and everything was fine, both bolts were still tight and we didn't see any unusual damage.
I'm stoked that Jason hasn't had any problems, wierd how his 02 did and Jason't didn't......
my drive shaft and rear axle are NOT in a straight line though. I will have to have someone reweld the crossmember like the pic Miniac posted a while back.
What happens when you dont flip it. It seems when you put the spacers in its going to be at the same height anyway, so way do it? Just me and some dumb questions! derek
Here's a pic I just dug up that was posted by Miniac. This is what has to be done once you go low enough. I had this done on my old truck and need it done to the new one as well.
Hey Andy, I just wanted to thank you for the carrier bearing tip. My freind tried your tip out and, it worked great. I still have a ever so slight vibration bewteen 20 and 30 mph. We are just going to notch it maybe this weekend. This should take out the remaining slack. Thanks again. Do you have any ideas on 2in drop coils? how much? What brand?
LOL.....N312D glad your enjoying your's as well! LOL
