So I bought a rostra cruise control kit for my 99 Taco. I found the wire that is on the 22 pin ecm connector which Rostra says is the green/orange pin 8 wire. I tapped into this wire and I am not getting any signal. On a side note, I have a stand alone computer system and I am not even using this ecm plug any more. Is this the VSS connector straight from the speed sensor or does it need to be passed through the computer before it is a square wave signal? My speedometer works fine. Is there another place I can get my VSS signal from other than the wire connected to this specific ecm connector? Can I tap into the wire in the back of my speedo cluster and if so which wire is it?
So, connected the cruise control wire to the VSS wire (Green/Orange) behind the instrument cluster and the cruise control works fine. Honestly, it seemed a lot easier to use the speedo wire than the ecm wire. Im not even sure I was using the correct wire from the ecm, even though it was green with orange stripe. Anyways, if anyone uses this kit, it works well and I'm happy to give anyone info if they are having difficulties.
(1) Here (attached) is the 1999 2RZ engine control wiring diagram.
(2) It sounds to me like you took the ECM out of the (speed signal) loop when you installed the standalone (and disconnected that particular ECM connector).
(3) As you can see on the diagram, the speed signal you were seeking came off the speedo / control / cluster unit, so you really just tapped into it one step 'earlier in the signal path', so to speak.
